AirCasting is an open-source environmental data visualization platform comprising a smartphone application and an online mapping system. The app gathers data from HabitatMap's AirBeam3 and various health and environmental monitoring devices, transferring it to the mapping interface. Please be aware that the iOS AirCasting app is not compatible with AirBeam2.
Featuring thousands of AirBeams measuring particulate matter globally and amassing over a billion data points, the AirCasting platform stands as one of the most extensive open-source databases housing community-driven air quality measurements. Through the documentation and utilization of health and environmental data to aid in individual decision-making and influence public policy, the platform provides invaluable tools for community organizations, educators, researchers, authorities, city planners, and citizen scientists to visualize air pollution levels and champion clean air initiatives.
The AirBeam is a cost-effective, compact air quality device designed to monitor localized concentrations of harmful microscopic airborne particles, such as particulate matter, alongside humidity and temperature levels. Delivering accurate readings of particulate matter, when paired with the AirCasting platform or a tailored solution, it aids in mapping pollution levels for a diverse range of users including community organizations, educators, researchers, authorities, city planners, and citizen scientists committed to combating air pollution.
This device measures harmful microscopic particles in the air (particulate matter), humidity, and temperature. Operating in mobile mode allows personal exposure tracking by wearing the AirBeam while the fixed mode permits indoor or outdoor installation without the need for shelter due to its weather-resistant nature. Consequently, it facilitates continuous monitoring of pollution levels in residences, workplaces, outdoor spaces, or neighborhoods round-the-clock.
AirCasting is a project developed by HabitatMap, an environmental technology nonprofit dedicated to creating open-source, no-cost or low-cost environmental monitoring tools coupled with data visualization solutions. These resources equip organizations and citizen scientists to measure pollution levels accurately and advocate for fair resolutions to environmental health challenges. By prioritizing low-income communities and marginalized groups grappling with disproportionate environmental concerns.
AirCasting is Open Source. The AirCasting project operates under an open-source model, allowing access to code repositories for both the AirCasting iOS app and web app on GitHub.
